Budgies Can Live a Lot Longer Than Many Realize
It’s a common misconception that budgies and other small birds have a very short life span. This belief is perpetuated by the continued lack of reliable care information for budgies from reputable sources for owners to access and the continued misinformation by many pet stores about their care.
The current average lifespan for a budgie is 5-8 years. However, some budgies can potentially live as long as 10-15 years! In fact, some longtime budgie keepers have even had some budgies in their care live to be more than 15 years old.
So what can you do to maximize your budgie’s potential lifespan? We do so by educating ourselves as owners so that we can provide high quality care and avoid potential pitfalls that can cost us years with our delightful budgie companions.
The Journey to Old Age
Baby budgies require special nutrition and early life socialization with their parents. These early weeks are extremely important in setting the bird up for the rest of its life.
Throughout its life, a budgie needs a combination of factors such as a healthy diet, exercise, and medical care. Diet is often overlooked but also the most common reason for budgies to pass away at a young age.
Budgies that make it to their senior years may start to show signs of aging. This is a normal, natural process. Regular vet checkups continue to be important to their wellbeing.
How Can You Help Your Budgie Live a Long, Healthy Life?
Maximizing your budgie’s healthy lifespan requires some basic understanding of how their bodies and minds work.
- Learn about household dangers that could contain toxins and harm your bird.
- Learn about parrot nutrition so that you can make intentional, informed choices about their diet.
- Be proactive about preventative care because prevention is much easier than diagnosis and treatment.
Offer a high quality space for plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation!
There is always more to consider but starting at the fundamentals often makes a big difference for your budgie!
Quality over Quantity
We all want our budgie friends to live as long a life as possible. Seeing them grow and watching them enjoy their lives in front of us is a truly magical experience. It’s only natural for us to want that experience to last as long as possible.
However, factors out of our control such as genetic issues or illness can sometimes lead to a budgie passing away before they reach senior age. When thinking about something like age, it’s easy to lose focus on the present. That’s why the most important thing we can do is to focus on right now and look at what we can realistically do to make their future better rather than think of our past shortcomings. By doing so, you’re giving them the best chance possible to reach old age, but even if they don’t, you will have provided them a happy, healthy life while they are with you.
